Connecting with friends while gaming on PlayStation 5 just got easier. Sony Interactive Entertainment recently announced the rollout of integrated Discord voice chat directly on PS5 consoles, simplifying in-game communication.
Streamlined Voice Chat Experience
Previously, using Discord on PS5 required external devices and apps. This update eliminates that hassle. After linking your PlayStation Network and Discord accounts, simply navigate to the Discord tab on your console, select your server, channel, or direct message, and start chatting. No more scrambling for your phone mid-game.
Global Rollout Underway
The feature is being released globally over several weeks. The rollout begins in Japan and other Asian countries, followed by Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, and finally, the Americas. Specific dates are yet to be announced, but ensure your console has the latest update installed once the feature becomes available in your region.
Enhanced Profile Sharing
Alongside Discord integration, PlayStation also announced PlayStation Network profile sharing. This allows users to easily share their profile information using a link or QR code generated through the PS App or console.
A Growing Partnership
The Sony and Discord partnership has been steadily evolving since Sony’s minority investment in Discord in 2021. This followed the conclusion of acquisition talks between Discord and Xbox, though Discord integration was later implemented on Xbox consoles. Integrated Discord voice chat has been available on Xbox since 2022.
Discord’s Expanding Presence
Discord has solidified its position as the leading voice chat platform for gamers, dominating PC and mobile platforms. Its integration with Xbox and PlayStation further expands its reach, solidifying its ubiquity. The next logical step would be integration with Nintendo Switch, making Discord truly omnipresent in the gaming world.
