Amidst discussions surrounding EV rebates in the U.S., Kia is focusing on enhancing its plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) offerings by doubling their all-electric range. With affordability and charging infrastructure remaining key barriers to widespread EV adoption, PHEVs have seen increased popularity in 2024. These vehicles offer the flexibility of both gas/electric hybrid mode and full electric mode, although the latter has been limited by range.

Currently, leading PHEVs in the U.S. like the Toyota Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime offer up to 42 and 45 miles of electric range, respectively. Kia’s current offerings, including the Kia EX and Sportage PHEVs, provide 33 and 34 miles respectively, closer to the current PHEV average.

However, this is set to change. Kia America COO Steven Center, speaking at the Los Angeles Auto Show, revealed to Green Car Reports that Kia aims to achieve a 60-mile electric range for its PHEVs within “a couple years.” This range improvement is anticipated to stem from advancements in battery technology and new vehicle platforms.

The target of 60 miles is based on data reflecting average daily driving distances and road trip mileage for Americans. While some manufacturers, primarily in Europe, already offer PHEVs exceeding this range, they often come with a premium price tag. Examples include the Mercedes E300e Urban edition (67 miles, ~$80,000) and the Range Rover PHEV (73 miles, ~$145,000).

Center hasn’t specified which Kia PHEV models will initially receive the extended 60-mile range. However, Kia’s recent strategic shift towards offering more affordable hybrid options in its 2025 lineup provides some clues. The 2025 Kia Niro Hybrid starts at $28,365, while the PHEV version, with a 33-mile electric range, begins at $35,865.

This increased focus on affordability, combined with the targeted range improvement, suggests Kia aims to make PHEVs a more compelling alternative for drivers seeking to transition towards electrified mobility. By addressing both range anxiety and cost concerns, Kia is positioning itself to compete effectively in the evolving automotive landscape.
