Green Day is celebrating the 30th anniversary of their iconic album Dookie in a unique way. Partnering with the Los Angeles-based art studio Brain, the band has created Dookie Demastered, a project that reimagines beloved tracks on retro formats, some of which push the boundaries of playability. For the gaming enthusiasts here at MaagX, the highlight is undoubtedly Welcome to Paradise on a Game Boy cartridge.

This special Game Pak cartridge is compatible with the original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance, as well as modern devices like the Analogue Pocket. Inserting the cartridge allows you to listen to the full four-minute track and admire the accompanying cover art displayed on the screen. A simple, yet novel way to experience this classic song. However, acquiring this unique piece of memorabilia isn’t as straightforward as a typical purchase.

Acquiring the Dookie Demastered Cartridge

The Welcome to Paradise Game Boy cartridge, along with other Dookie Demastered items, is available exclusively through a raffle system. Interested fans can enter the drawing for each item, which also includes Burnout on a player piano roll ($49), Having a Blast on a floppy disk ($19), and Basket Case on a Big Mouth Billie Bass ($79). Winners will be charged the respective price upon selection. Due to limited availability, only a small number of fans will be able to secure these unique items, with only 25 copies of the Game Boy cartridge available.

Dookie Demastered: A Unique Listening Experience

The official Dookie Demastered website describes the project as an “unparalleled” listening experience, highlighting the intentional “sacrifice” of not only sound quality but also convenience, and even “occasionally entire verses.” Interestingly, the 8-bit chiptune sample of Welcome to Paradise provided on the cartridge’s product page sounds remarkably faithful to the original. While it could be compared to a high-priced HitClip (look it up if you’re unfamiliar), the inclusion of an actual, expensive HitClip within the Dookie Demastered collection makes that comparison somewhat redundant.

Is it Worth It?

Whether or not the $39 price tag for the Welcome to Paradise Game Boy cartridge is justified depends on individual perspectives. For fans seeking a delightfully unconventional piece of Green Day memorabilia, this limited-edition cartridge offers a unique blend of nostalgia and novelty. The raffle entry period closes at 11 a.m. PT on October 11, so interested fans should act quickly.
