Axiom Space, NASA’s commercial partner, has revealed the final design of its next-generation spacesuits, the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), designed in collaboration with Prada, for lunar exploration. These suits mark a significant advancement in spacesuit technology since the Apollo missions and will be used in the Artemis program.
The AxEMU, showcased at the International Astronautical Congress, features the classic white material vital for reflecting heat and protecting astronauts from lunar dust. This unveiling follows an initial reveal over a year ago, where the suit was concealed beneath a dark cover layer to protect proprietary technology.

NASA commissioned Axiom Space in 2022 to develop these groundbreaking spacesuits, the first designed for moonwalking since the Apollo era. The initial contract was valued at $228.5 million. The final design showcases the suit’s various functionalities, including an integrated health monitoring system, a cooling system, specialized helmet and visor coatings for enhanced visibility, and advanced pressure garments.
Advanced Features for Enhanced Lunar Exploration
The AxEMU prioritizes enhanced mobility and safety for lunar exploration. It boasts increased range of motion and incorporates adjustable sizing options to accommodate a diverse range of astronauts. The design represents a significant leap from the current spacesuits used by NASA astronauts, which are over 40 years old. Axiom Space has seamlessly blended the legacy of NASA’s spacesuit design with cutting-edge technology, improved flexibility, and superior protection against the harsh lunar environment.
Prada’s Influence on Design and Aesthetics
Axiom Space’s partnership with Prada leveraged the luxury brand’s expertise in design and materials, resulting in a sleek, modern aesthetic. “I’m very proud of the result we’re showing today…We’ve shared our expertise on high-performance materials, features, and sewing techniques, and we learned a lot,” commented Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group’s chief marketing officer.

Preparing for Artemis 3
The AxEMU is slated for use on NASA’s Artemis 3 mission, scheduled for launch in September 2026. According to Axiom Space, the suit is “nearing the final development stage” and has successfully undergone pressurized simulations with NASA and SpaceX in preparation for the mission.
A New Era of Space Exploration Collaboration
Russell Ralston, executive vice president of Extravehicular Activity at Axiom Space, highlighted the importance of partnerships in the commercialization of space: “We are pioneering a new era in space exploration where partnerships are imperative to the commercialization of space…For the first time, we are leveraging expertise in other industries to craft a better solution for space.” This collaboration between Axiom Space and Prada signifies a novel approach to spacesuit development, bringing together the strengths of diverse industries to advance space exploration.
