Aspyr, known for its remastering and porting work, has teamed up with Crystal Dynamics, the developers of the Tomb Raider franchise, to release a remastered trilogy. This collection features entries from the second Tomb Raider trilogy, including the often-criticized The Angel of Darkness.

Announced on Friday, Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered will include The Last Revelation, Chronicles, and the controversial The Angel of Darkness. Each game will receive upgrades, boasting improved graphics, the option to toggle between classic and modern control schemes, and over 150 new trophies for achievement enthusiasts. The popular photo mode from Tomb Raider I-III Remastered will also be included, along with a welcome addition: boss health bars.

This trilogy represents a turbulent period in the Tomb Raider saga. After the phenomenal success of the original game, publisher Eidos Interactive pressured Core Design, the original developers, to release a new Tomb Raider title annually. This relentless schedule led to burnout, culminating in an attempt to retire Lara Croft – an attempt that ultimately failed. The Last Revelation concluded with Lara’s apparent demise, but due to the game’s commercial success, she was resurrected. Chronicles, released the following year, underperformed and was considered the series’ biggest disappointment – until The Angel of Darkness arrived.

The final installment of this trilogy faced numerous challenges. Core Design was struggling with Eidos’s yearly release mandate, and the game, being the first Tomb Raider title developed for the PlayStation 2, suffered from technical issues. Despite strong sales, The Angel of Darkness highlighted the need for a series reboot.
