Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri announced on Thursday that a new generative AI tool is expected to launch in 2025, simplifying video editing by allowing users to modify videos with text prompts.

This upcoming tool, powered by Meta’s Movie Gen model, will empower users to “change nearly any aspect of your videos,” Mosseri explained during his preview. These changes can range from minor adjustments, such as adding a gold chain to his outfit or a hippo in the background, to significant alterations like changing his entire wardrobe or giving himself a Muppet-like appearance.

Meta’s Movie Gen: A Competitor in the AI Video Arena

Meta introduced Movie Gen in October to compete with similar tools like Runway’s Gen 3 Alpha and OpenAI’s Sora. Designed to create custom videos and sounds, edit existing videos, and transform personal images into unique videos, Movie Gen builds on Meta’s previous multimodal projects like Make-A-Scene and Llama. This integration gives users more control over the output. Meta emphasized in October that these models understand object motion, subject-object interactions, and camera motion, enabling them to generate plausible movements for a variety of concepts, making them cutting-edge in their category.

Impressive Demonstration, But Will It Deliver?

The demonstration video is impressive, showing minimal distortion to Mosseri’s digital outfits as he moves and speaks. However, the effects were brief. OpenAI’s Sora, announced in February, made similar promises but hasn’t fully met expectations. It remains to be seen whether Movie Gen’s performance in the preview will translate to the user experience in 2025.

The Future of AI Video Editing

As large language models’ multimodal capabilities improve, text-to-video AIs have rapidly expanded in the past year. Movie Gen is likely to face strong competition in 2025 as more tools enter the market. Its ability to generate both video and audio from text prompts, along with its editing and personalization features, will likely be key advantages.

In conclusion, the integration of generative AI into Instagram video editing promises a significant shift in how users create and modify content. While the preview is promising, the true test will be its real-world performance upon release.
