The Epic Games Store is significantly expanding its mobile presence, aiming to offer up to 50 third-party titles by the end of 2024. This move, coupled with the introduction of a free games program similar to its desktop counterpart, reinforces Epic’s commitment to challenging the mobile gaming landscape.

Epic Games Store General Manager, Steve Allison, revealed these plans during a roundtable discussion following the Unreal Fest keynote. He indicated that the free games program will launch on mobile before the end of the year, with the first third-party applications expected around the holiday season. While the target is between 10 and 50 titles, the implementation of a payment solution for developers is a key factor that could impact the final number.

The mobile version of the Epic Games Store launched on Android globally in August and on iOS in the EU. Initially, it featured Epic’s own titles: Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League Sideswipe. The company’s intention from the outset was to expand its offerings by including third-party games and pursuing availability on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Ark: Ultimate Mobile Edition has been announced as one of the first third-party additions, slated for release later this year. Furthermore, Epic is offering a reduced 3.5% royalty fee for games developed using Unreal Engine and launched on the Epic Games Store.

This strategy aligns with Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney’s ongoing critique of Apple and Google’s app store practices. Epic previously filed lawsuits against both companies, alleging anticompetitive behavior related to developer fees. These legal battles stemmed from Epic’s attempt to bypass Apple and Google’s payment systems for in-app purchases within Fortnite, leading to the game’s removal from both app stores. Subsequent legal developments, including a 2022 EU ruling mandating open access to third-party platforms, paved the way for Epic’s return.

During his keynote, Sweeney reiterated his criticism, stating, “Apple and Google have a totally broken vision for the world… we’re at a point now where game development is expensive. It’s low margin, and game companies are suffering.”

Currently, the Epic Games Store on mobile remains accessible primarily through Epic’s website for Android users. iOS users in the EU must also follow a similar process. While broader availability on app stores remains a goal, the exact timeline remains uncertain.

In conclusion, the Epic Games Store is poised to become a more substantial player in the mobile gaming market. The addition of third-party titles, coupled with the free games program and reduced developer fees, creates a compelling alternative for both developers and players. This expansion represents a significant step in Epic’s ongoing challenge to established app store models.
