The Advance Wars series finally makes its long-awaited return to North America with the release of Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp on Nintendo Switch. This compilation bundles together the Game Boy Advance classics, Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising, with updated visuals and modern enhancements. While some aspects of the presentation show their age, this package offers a compelling experience for both seasoned strategists and newcomers to the turn-based genre.
Advance Wars unfolds in a fictional world where nations clash in strategic combat. The Orange Star nation finds itself under attack by its rivals, Blue Moon, setting the stage for a gripping campaign. Players take on the role of commanding officer Andy, guided by the army leader Nell, maneuvering diverse military units across grid-based maps. Each unit possesses unique strengths and weaknesses: Tanks and Helicopters deliver powerful blows, while Infantry and Mechs capture vital cities and bases. Victory is achieved by eliminating enemy units or seizing their base.
As players progress, they unlock additional commanding officers (COs) Max and Sami, each with distinct advantages and CO powers. Max excels in direct combat, while Sami specializes in leading infantry units. Choosing the right CO for each mission becomes a crucial strategic element. The game gradually introduces different unit types and offers a casual mode, making it accessible to players unfamiliar with the genre.
While the gameplay mechanics might seem complex, Re-Boot Camp provides a gentle learning curve, even for those new to turn-based strategy. The “E for Everyone” rating reflects the game’s lighthearted approach to warfare, with a cartoonish aesthetic that avoids graphic violence.
Missions can be lengthy, but quality-of-life improvements mitigate potential frustration. A fast-forward feature speeds up enemy turns, and autosaving between moves allows for convenient breaks. The game’s presentation is a mixed bag. While character models and CO Power animations are vibrant and polished, the core gameplay visuals retain the look of an upscaled GBA game. The soundtrack, however, is undeniably catchy.
Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp offers substantial content with two full games and multiplayer options. WayForward’s faithful adaptation of the originals, combined with thoughtful modernizations, makes this a worthwhile purchase for both veterans and newcomers. This revitalized classic provides a satisfying strategy experience on Nintendo Switch and hopefully paves the way for future entries in the series.
Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp releases April 21st, exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
