Backing up and restoring your Google Messages data on Android currently relies on Google One through your device’s settings. This process, however, isn’t accessible directly within the Google Messages app itself. That’s about to change.
A recent Google Messages beta (version 20241118_02_RC00) reveals upcoming in-app backup and restore functionality, according to 9to5Google. Android Authority has also provided insights into this new feature, including images of the interface.
Enhanced Backup and Restore Options Within the App
The new “Backup & restore” section within Google Messages highlights several key benefits:
- Comprehensive Backup: Restore conversations, media, and more, all within the app.
- End-to-End Encryption: Backups will be end-to-end encrypted and secured using your device’s screen lock.
- Automatic Restoration: Your conversations will automatically restore upon signing in.
The app will now prompt users to activate the backup feature, with the option to enable it later through the “Backup & Sync” setting.
Improved Security and Flexibility
The updated backup and restore process will include end-to-end encryption, provided your device’s screen lock is enabled. Automatic restoration upon sign-in will streamline the process, eliminating the need for manual restoration.

Furthermore, the update introduces a toggle for syncing photos and videos exclusively over Wi-Fi. As Android Authority notes, this aligns with other messaging apps, allowing users to sync text history over mobile data without exceeding data limits.
