The Apple AirTag is a popular device for tracking belongings, but its reliance on CR2032 batteries has been a minor inconvenience. While hopes were high for a rechargeable battery in the AirTag 2, reports suggest it will stick with a coin cell. Mark Gurman, in his Power On newsletter (via MacRumors), indicated that the second-generation AirTag will continue to utilize this type of battery.
Although the lack of a rechargeable battery is a slight disappointment, it’s not a significant drawback. CR2032 batteries are readily available, relatively inexpensive, and typically last over a year in an AirTag, depending on usage. Furthermore, the anticipated upgrades in the AirTag 2 may make it a worthwhile investment despite this limitation.
One key improvement focuses on addressing privacy concerns and the potential for misuse in stalking. The AirTag 2 is rumored to have redesigned internal components that make it more difficult to disable the built-in speaker, a feature used for locating the tracker. This enhanced security measure aims to deter unauthorized tracking and improve user safety.

Another significant upgrade is expected in the tracking range. The original AirTag has a limited range of approximately 30 feet. The AirTag 2 is anticipated to have a significantly extended range, although the exact distance remains unknown. It’s hoped that the new range will be comparable to competitors like the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2, which boasts a range of 120 meters (nearly 400 feet).
AirTag 2: Release Date and Price
While no official release date has been announced by Apple, current speculation points towards a 2025 launch. Pricing details are also unconfirmed, but it’s reasonable to expect a slightly higher price point than the original AirTag. Based on Apple’s pricing trends, a price around $30 seems plausible.
AirTag 2: A Worthwhile Upgrade?
AirTags are undeniably practical devices for anyone prone to misplacing their belongings. The rumored improvements in the AirTag 2, particularly the enhanced security and extended range, make it a promising update to Apple’s tracking device lineup. While the continued use of coin cell batteries may not be ideal for everyone, the overall enhancements could still make the AirTag 2 a valuable purchase.
