Android 15 may have just launched, but Google is already looking ahead to Android 16, releasing the first Developer Preview much earlier than usual. If you own a compatible Pixel device, you can get your hands on it today. What’s even more surprising is the inclusion of the Pixel 6 series in the supported device list.
Traditionally, Pixel phones are the first to receive Android betas. While Google’s announcement didn’t initially specify which Pixel models would be compatible with the Android 16 Developer Preview, they’ve now clarified, and the list includes a couple of unexpected entries.
According to Google’s support documentation, the Pixel 6 and newer models will be able to run Android 16. This is unexpected considering the Pixel 6 lineup was originally guaranteed updates only up to Android 15, scheduled for October 2024. This extended support suggests Pixel 6 devices could potentially remain relevant for another year.

So, what’s new in Android 16? Currently, there aren’t any groundbreaking features apparent. However, a key change involves a new API for the Android photo picker, designed for a more integrated experience within apps. While many third-party apps currently utilize their own photo pickers, the adoption of this new, more secure API should encourage wider developer support. Additionally, new APIs for reading and writing health records via Health Connect have been introduced.
Why the accelerated release schedule for Android 16? Google states this will provide developers more time to adapt their apps for the next Android iteration.
It’s important to reiterate that this is a very early developer beta for Android 16. Installation is recommended only for app developers, and even then, preferably on a secondary device, not your primary phone.
This early release of the Android 16 Developer Preview, coupled with the unexpected support for the Pixel 6 series, suggests Google is prioritizing developer engagement and extending the lifespan of its devices.
