The rumored Resident Evil 9 won’t be launching anytime soon. Despite pre-The Game Awards 2023 speculation, the next installment in the survival horror franchise failed to materialize, dashing hopes for a 2024 release. A recent update from a prominent Resident Evil insider suggests a significant delay, pushing the launch further into the future.
Known leaker Dusk Golem revealed that Resident Evil 9 was initially slated for a summer 2023 reveal, but an internal development delay postponed the announcement. This delay appears to be substantial, reminiscent of the Resident Evil 2 remake, which was initially targeted for a January 2018 release but ultimately launched in January 2019. “I’m not very surprised after learning it got delayed from a reveal last summer and an internal development delay that it didn’t appear anywhere this year,” stated Dusk Golem.
The insider indicated that Capcom’s busy release schedule and the ambitious scope of Resident Evil 9 contributed to the delay. While Resident Evil Village experienced a minor delay, this appears more significant. “While Resident Evil Village got delayed a small bit from its initial release window, this felt more like a Resident Evil 2-level delay,” Dusk Golem explained. He also mentioned Capcom’s packed pipeline, saying, “Capcom’s pipeline has a lot going on anyways, so I can 100% see a scenario Capcom’s had to figure it in through both the lens that they have a lot of other games coming out and Resident Evil 9 needs more time to cook.”
According to Dusk Golem, Resident Evil 9 is a “really ambitious game,” likely requiring more development time compared to simpler remakes. He suggested Capcom is currently determining where to fit the game within its release schedule for the next few years, stating, “It’s a really ambitious game anyway, so if they think it needs time then that’s fine, but I do think Capcom is working out where to fit it in the next couple years probably,”
This information, while coming from a generally reliable source, should still be treated as speculation. Dusk Golem, though accurate in the past, has also been known to miss the mark. Capcom has not commented on these rumors, and it’s unlikely they will address them officially.
