This holiday season, I opted for a digital approach to our annual family photo. Instead of a traditional photoshoot, I decided to explore the capabilities of AI image generation using Google’s Pixel Studio and Apple’s Image Playground. While I’m not entirely convinced these tools can fully replace a real photoshoot, the promise of AI-powered image creation intrigued me enough to put them to the test.
Image Playground: A Focus on Faces
Apple’s Image Playground, integrated into iOS 18.2 for the iPhone 16, proved surprisingly adept at generating human likenesses. Unlike Pixel Studio, which currently lacks the ability to create human images, Image Playground allowed me to create individual portraits of my family members. While it can’t yet compose group photos, the results were impressive.
My initial experiments taught me that a minimalist approach yields the best results with Image Playground. Starting with a simple prompt of “winter holidays” and my daughter’s face (pre-identified by Apple Intelligence), the AI generated a recognizable image. I then refined the image by requesting blue eyes (to match her real eye color) and a scarf. The likeness was striking, even earning the approval of my husband, who remarked, “It’s pretty cute. It looks like her.”
Despite the overall accuracy, some minor imperfections remained. The teeth and eyes occasionally appeared slightly distorted, a common issue I encountered across multiple generated images. However, from a distance, the results were more than passable.
Adding elements like a Santa hat was easy, thanks to Image Playground’s ability to retain previous prompt phrases. However, generating background elements proved less successful. Attempts to incorporate snowmen resulted in incomplete figures, often lacking essential features. Similarly, Image Playground struggled with incorporating text into the images, producing illegible results when prompted to write “Merry Christmas.”

Pixel Studio: Ideal for Stickers and Pet Portraits
Google’s Pixel Studio, while less proficient with human likenesses, excels in creating stylized images and text-based graphics. Its inability to generate human images limits its use for family portraits, but it offers a range of other creative possibilities. Prompts like “cats,” “dogs,” and “Christmas tree inspiration” provide helpful starting points.
Pixel Studio impressed me with its ability to generate detailed images based on complex prompts. For instance, a prompt describing a “sleepy, tuxedo cat with green eyes and a pink nose wearing a Santa hat,” against a Christmas backdrop, with the text “Catmas” underneath, yielded remarkably accurate results. Attempting the same prompt in Image Playground resulted in a truncated prompt, an inability to generate text, and a cat inexplicably dressed in a human tuxedo.
Pixel Studio’s text generation capabilities, while not flawless, are significantly better than Image Playground’s. It successfully rendered phrases like “Feliz Navidad” (Spanish for “Merry Christmas”). However, it struggled with less common languages like Romanian, producing illegible text and an inconsistent aesthetic.

Conclusion: A Glimpse into the Future of Holiday Greetings
Both Image Playground and Pixel Studio offer intriguing glimpses into the future of AI-powered image creation. While neither platform is perfect, they provide unique strengths. Image Playground excels at generating human likenesses, while Pixel Studio is better suited for stylized images, pet portraits, and text-based graphics. The “uncanny valley” effect is still present in both, but the results are compelling enough to consider using them as a creative alternative to traditional holiday photos. I’m eager to share these AI-generated images with friends and family and gather their feedback on this new form of holiday cheer.
