The Guinness World Records (GWR) book, known for its compilation of remarkable feats, has a 2024 theme of “Blue Planet” emphasizing the natural world. Hyundai seized this opportunity to showcase the capabilities of its Ioniq 5 electric vehicle (EV) by setting a new world record for the greatest altitude change experienced by an EV.

This December, Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 completed a grueling 3,000-mile journey across the Indian peninsula, descending an astonishing 19,035 feet. This feat surpasses the previous record held by China’s Changan Nevo A07 EV, which achieved an 18,766-foot altitude change during a 1,500-mile trek through Tibet in 2023.

The Ioniq 5’s epic journey commenced at India’s highest drivable point, Umling La in Leh Ladakh, situated 19,025 feet above sea level in the Himalayas. The expedition culminated in Kuttanad, Kerala, a region 9.8 feet below sea level.

Over two weeks, the Ioniq 5 navigated challenging terrain and extreme weather conditions. From freezing temperatures and steep mountain passes in the Himalayas to the humid coastal regions of Kerala, the EV demonstrated its resilience and adaptability.

“This accomplishment underscores Hyundai’s dedication to innovation, technological advancement, and environmental responsibility,” stated Unsoo Kim, managing director of Hyundai Motor India. He added, “The Ioniq 5’s performance under such demanding conditions highlights its robust engineering and durability.”

The Ioniq 5 boasts a 72.6 kWh battery, enabling a driving range exceeding 300 miles. This impressive range, combined with its robust performance, made it ideal for the challenging record attempt.

This record coincides with the commencement of 2025 Ioniq 5 deliveries in the U.S. Significantly, the 2025 model is the first to incorporate a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, compatible with Tesla Superchargers. Using this technology, the base model Ioniq 5 can charge from 10% to 80% in just 24 minutes, further enhancing its practicality.

The record-breaking achievement by the Hyundai Ioniq 5 not only highlights the advancements in EV technology but also reinforces the growing focus on sustainability within the automotive industry. Hyundai’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of EV performance and range positions it as a key player in the transition to electric mobility.
