Path of Exile 2’s early access launch this month cemented its place among 2024’s biggest releases, even landing in the top 20 biggest Steam launches of all time. However, Grinding Gears Games’ aggressive approach to balance changes is sparking discontent among early adopters.
Following the previously announced nerf to Supercharged Slam, the developer revealed plans to adjust Gas Cloud explosions. Grinding Gears Games stated that the explosions are “too easy to detonate” when combined with persistent Ignite skills like Flame Wall. The upcoming update will specifically target the explosion damage of both Gas Grenade and Gas Arrow.
The developer explained their reasoning: “In the future, we want to update it such that the potency of the Ignite or Detonator contributes to determining the damage of the Gas Cloud explosions, that way we would be able to avoid balancing around the simplest and most efficient way to apply Ignites.”
This announcement was met with resistance from some players, who question the prioritization of balance changes over other potential issues in the early access version. One long-term Path of Exile player expressed concern, stating, “This is unlike you guys. As a long term Path of Exile player your priority ranking here seems to be very abnormal….nerfing things this early when there’s a million other problems with the game in regards to balance? What’s going on?”
Another player questioned the developer’s approach: “Why do you keep punishing players for finding cool builds? Why Grinding Gear Games?”
While some players support the changes, the dominant sentiment on platforms like X expresses frustration with the focus on nerfs so soon after the early access release. Many argue that other issues should take precedence. The debate raises the question: should Grinding Gears Games slow down on the Path of Exile 2 nerfs?
The decision to prioritize balance adjustments in an early access release highlights the challenges developers face in managing player expectations and maintaining a healthy game environment. The community’s response underscores the importance of clear communication and a balanced approach to game development. Ultimately, the success of Path of Exile 2 will depend on how Grinding Gears Games addresses these concerns and incorporates player feedback into future updates.
