Samsung Galaxy S24 and Z Fold 6 users on T-Mobile in the US are getting a taste of satellite messaging. This comes after pre-launch rumors hinted at the feature, which ultimately wasn’t available at the January release. The rollout, however, is currently limited to a select group.

This new satellite connectivity is tied to T-Mobile’s Starlink service, currently in beta testing. Users who previously registered for the T-Mobile Starlink beta are now seeing the feature appear on their compatible Galaxy S24 and Z Fold 6 devices. The service is free for T-Mobile postpaid customers. Those interested in joining the beta can sign up on T-Mobile’s website.

To access the satellite messaging feature, users can navigate to Settings > Connections > Satellite Networks. This functionality allows for sending and receiving text messages in areas without cellular coverage.

While the beta is limited to select T-Mobile customers, the broader release of the T-Mobile Starlink service is expected to support any Android phone with LTE connectivity. This aligns with the introduction of native satellite messaging support in Android 15, designed to enhance communication in areas with limited or no cellular network access.

This move by T-Mobile and Samsung brings Android devices closer to parity with Apple’s iPhones, which have offered satellite messaging since the iPhone 14 series. Widespread adoption of satellite communication technology promises improved connectivity and safety for users in remote locations or emergency situations.

Android 15’s inclusion of satellite messaging support marks a significant step toward wider availability. However, full functionality relies on both carrier support and device compatibility, which are still developing across the industry. The T-Mobile Starlink beta on the Galaxy S24 and Z Fold 6 offers a glimpse into the future of mobile communication, where connectivity extends beyond the reach of traditional cellular networks.
