The Witcher universe expands once again with a new novel by Andrzej Sapkowski, titled Rozdroże Kruków, translated as Raven Crossroads. This marks the first new Witcher book since 2013’s Season of Storms, reigniting excitement among fans eager for more adventures in the Continent. This latest installment promises a fresh perspective on the iconic monster hunter, delving into Geralt of Rivia’s formative years.
The cover art depicts a young Geralt confronting a creature in a cemetery setting, hinting at the challenges and dangers he faced early in his career. While Sapkowski had previously confirmed Geralt’s involvement in the new book, the plot details and timeframe remained shrouded in mystery until recently. Now, it’s been revealed that the story will focus on Geralt’s teenage years, offering a glimpse into his development as a witcher.
The plot description provides further insight into this new chapter: “This time the grandmaster of Polish fantasy is going back to Geralt’s teenage years, who is only taking his first steps in the witch craft and has to face numerous challenges. Armed with two runic swords, he fights monsters, saves innocent virgins and helps unhappy lovers. Always and everywhere he tries to obey the unwritten code he got from his teachers and mentors. As usual, life spares no disappointments – youthful idealism clashes with reality from time to time. The saga continues. The story never ends…”
This prequel approach marks a shift for Sapkowski, who previously expressed reluctance towards exploring timelines outside the existing saga. The success of Raven Crossroads could potentially pave the way for further stories set during Geralt’s youth, expanding this previously unexplored era. While sequels remain uncertain, the prospect of revisiting familiar characters in the future remains enticing for many fans.
The first chapter of Raven Crossroads is currently available in the November issue of Nowa Fantastyka magazine. The full book launches in Poland on December 1st, 2024. International release dates are yet to be announced.
