The first season of Amazon Prime’s anthology series Secret Level, based on popular video games, premiered last month. Co-creators Tim Miller and Dave Wilson sought to adapt various game franchises, from classics like Mega Man and Pac-Man to modern hits like Sifu and New World. Now, post-release, we’re gaining insight into the games considered, and some exciting near-misses. In a recent interview with Collider, Miller and Wilson revealed their ambition for crossover episodes, notably a potential Halo and Doom mashup.
A Dream Crossover Denied
Wilson explained to Collider their strong desire to explore uncharted territory with crossover episodes. They envisioned a Master Chief/Doom Slayer team-up, with Wilson even penning a heartfelt letter outlining his childhood dream. However, despite connections with id Software and Microsoft, the proposal was ultimately rejected. “We wanted to make a Master Chief/Doom Slayer crossover episode, and I spent a whole weekend crafting this impassioned letter of my childhood,” Wilson shared. “And it’s exactly what Tim said; they were like, ‘Nah.’”
The prospect of these iconic characters joining forces is undeniably thrilling. Yet, Microsoft’s reluctance is understandable. A Halo/Doom crossover is a significant undertaking, potentially disrupting the carefully maintained separation of these universes. Additionally, pre-existing TV rights for the now-canceled Paramount+ Halo series could have presented legal obstacles. Miller alluded to the complexities of navigating video game rights and “a lot of lawyers.” This rejection echoes Microsoft’s similar refusal for a Half-Life adaptation.
Navigating the Rights Maze and Hopes for Season 2
Miller and Wilson highlighted the numerous challenges faced in bringing Secret Level to fruition. Securing rights for beloved franchises proved a major hurdle. With Season 2 already confirmed by Amazon, there’s hope that companies initially hesitant might reconsider their involvement. Perhaps Microsoft will be more receptive, whether for a single-game episode or the envisioned crossover. The creators remain optimistic, stating they are “hopeful that it opens doors.”
What Could Have Been, and What Might Be
The potential for a Master Chief/Doom Slayer team-up remains tantalizing. While Season 1 missed this opportunity, the future of Secret Level holds exciting possibilities. With a second season on the horizon, the landscape of video game adaptations could shift, opening doors for previously unimaginable crossovers. Only time will tell what the future holds for this ambitious series.
