Grand Theft Auto VI: A 2026 Release More Likely Than 2025? Grand Theft Auto VI: A 2026 Release More Likely Than 2025?

2025 is shaping up to be a monumental year for gaming, with anticipated titles like Ghost of Tsushima 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Death Stranding 2, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, DOOM: The Dark Ages, and potentially the Nintendo Switch 2. However, the most anticipated release is undoubtedly Grand Theft Auto VI, currently slated for the latter half of 2025. While Rockstar Games aims for this release window, a 2026 launch seems increasingly probable.

Delays are now a common occurrence in the AAA gaming landscape. Major publishers like PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox, and third-party giants like EA, Ubisoft, and Sega routinely postpone releases. Developing complex games like GTA VI demands extensive time and resources, often leading to unforeseen complications and subsequent delays.

Rockstar’s track record also points towards a potential delay. Grand Theft Auto IV was pushed from 2007 to 2008, and Grand Theft Auto V saw a slight delay before its September 2013 release. More recently, Red Dead Redemption 2 faced two significant delays, totaling approximately a year. Given this history, a similar delay for GTA VI wouldn’t be surprising.

Importantly, a 2025 release isn’t crucial for GTA VI. Besides potential financial adjustments for Take-Two Interactive, the game’s revenue potential remains immense regardless of the launch date. Take-Two isn’t pressured to release prematurely, prioritizing quality over a rushed launch.

Rushing GTA VI would be detrimental, potentially jeopardizing its long-term success. Rockstar aims for a lifespan comparable to GTA V, requiring a polished and complete product at launch. Both Rockstar and Take-Two understand this, likely prioritizing a delay over a flawed release.

The current silence surrounding GTA VI since its December 2023 trailer reveal adds to the uncertainty. Whether this silence is positive or negative remains to be seen, leaving fans eager for updates. Further communication from Rockstar will hopefully clarify the release window or date.

While a 2025 release isn’t impossible, a launch in early 2026 seems more likely. The complexity of development, Rockstar’s history of delays, and the importance of a polished final product suggest a delay is a realistic possibility. Like many eager fans, we hope for a 2025 release but anticipate a potential shift to 2026.
