If you’ve recently purchased an official case for your OnePlus 13, you might have noticed a peculiar plastic insert tucked away inside the packaging. Resembling a “Do Not Disturb” sign, this seemingly insignificant piece of plastic is actually crucial for optimal wireless charging performance. Before you dismiss it as superfluous packaging, read on to discover its importance.

Decoding the Plastic Film’s Purpose
This thin plastic film plays a vital role in ensuring efficient wireless charging, particularly for the Arctic Dawn and Black Eclipse versions of the OnePlus 13. The insert’s instructions state: “For the best wireless charging experience, please place the wireless charging cover between the back of the Arctic Dawn version of the OnePlus 13 and your phone case.”
While all official OnePlus 13 cases include this insert, and all have magnets to align with the AirVOOC 50W wireless charging puck, its necessity varies depending on the phone’s finish. Interestingly, during my review of the Midnight Ocean OnePlus 13 (which features a vegan leather back), wireless charging functioned effectively both with and without the insert.
Why the Plastic Film Matters for Certain OnePlus 13 Models

To understand the film’s function, we contacted OnePlus directly. Their response clarified its purpose: “The OnePlus 13 features a microfiber vegan leather (Midnight Ocean), and two glass back options (Arctic Dawn and Black Eclipse). Due to variations in material thickness and composition, we’ve included the plastic film with the Arctic Dawn and Black Eclipse models to ensure efficient wireless charging.”
While the explanation remains somewhat vague regarding the how, it confirms the film’s importance for both glass-backed models, even though the instructions only mention Arctic Dawn. To ensure optimal wireless charging performance, it’s recommended to use the insert regardless of your glass-backed OnePlus 13 variant.
Applying the Wireless Charging Insert: A How-To Guide

While the concept is simple, the application can be slightly tricky. The film isn’t aesthetically pleasing, and this is the first instance where a manufacturer has recommended such a solution for enhanced functionality. Simply placing the film inside the case often results in misalignment and protrusion from the camera cutout.
For best results, place the film directly onto the back of your OnePlus 13, ensuring it lies flat. Then, apply the case over the phone and film. This method prevents the film from shifting and ensures proper alignment. Once encased, the film is invisible, adds no noticeable weight, and remains securely in place. It’s not the most elegant solution, but it effectively addresses the potential for slow wireless charging.
Potential Compatibility Issues with Third-Party Cases

It’s unlikely that third-party case manufacturers will include this specific film, especially since it’s only necessary for certain OnePlus 13 models. Consequently, users opting for third-party cases may experience suboptimal wireless charging speeds.
So, if you hastily discarded the plastic film from your OnePlus 13 case packaging, now you understand its significance. Retrieve it from the recycling bin and ensure it’s in place for the best possible wireless charging experience.
