BMW, a pioneer in modern automotive infotainment with its early 2000s iDrive system, is revolutionizing the in-car experience once again with its new Panoramic iDrive. Debuting at CES 2025, this cutting-edge system will be standard in new BMW models, including the highly anticipated Neue Klasse EVs, starting late 2025.
This next-generation iDrive boasts a sleek, wide display stretching across the entire dashboard, positioned at the base of the windshield. Similar to recent Ford infotainment systems, this placement optimizes the driver’s line of sight for crucial information like speed, navigation, and driver-assist features. The panoramic display also incorporates up to six customizable widgets for secondary information, allowing drivers to personalize their view.
Complementing the panoramic display is a smaller touchscreen centrally located between the front seats. Equipped with advanced matrix backlighting technology, this secondary screen provides enhanced resolution and utilizes the intuitive QuickSelect menu logic from current iDrive systems, prioritizing frequently accessed functions. BMW’s integrated voice recognition, powered by large language model (LLM) software, further enhances user interaction.
Steering wheel controls are also reimagined with haptic buttons, designed for easy tactile location. These haptic switches replace traditional stalks and levers for functions like windshield wipers, turn signals, and gear shifting, resulting in a clean and minimalist cabin aesthetic.
While the panoramic display occupies the space typically reserved for head-up displays, BMW hasn’t abandoned this technology. A new 3D head-up display will be offered, projecting navigation and driver-assist information directly onto the windshield.
Powering the entire system is the new BMW Operating System X, built on an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack. This updated operating system promises enhanced update and upgrade capabilities, along with seamless integration between hardware components. For instance, incoming calls trigger both a visual icon on the main display and an illuminated steering wheel button, facilitating effortless call acceptance.
The Neue Klasse EVs, launching in Europe at the end of 2025 (with a potential delay for the U.S. market), represent BMW’s renewed focus on dedicated electric vehicles. Unlike current models like the i5 and i7, which adapt existing internal-combustion platforms, the Neue Klasse signifies a ground-up approach to EV design. Alongside the innovative Panoramic iDrive, these EVs are expected to deliver significant advancements in range and efficiency.
