Google Home is enhancing its smart home capabilities with the addition of Nest Protect and Matter-certified smart lock support. This integration, currently rolling out through the Public Preview program, brings advanced safety and security features to the Google Home ecosystem, as reported by 9to5Google.
Enhanced Safety with Nest Protect Integration
The integration of Nest Protect marks a significant step forward, making it the first smoke and carbon monoxide detector compatible with Google Home. This allows users to receive real-time emergency notifications, including smoke and carbon monoxide alerts, directly within the Google Home app. Beyond immediate alerts, users also gain access to critical status updates, such as battery health and device issues, ensuring the ongoing effectiveness of their Nest Protect system.
Users can proactively monitor their safety by checking the last test date of their alarms and initiating system-wide safety checks. The integration also offers convenient scheduling options for automatic sound check testing, particularly useful when away from home. Furthermore, users can customize settings for both the entire system and individual alarms, providing granular control over their Nest Protect setup.
For added peace of mind during emergencies, users can view live camera feeds directly from the emergency alarm card. Nest Aware subscribers in the U.S. benefit from the ability to contact nearby emergency call centers through the Google Home app, regardless of their location.
Streamlined Security with Matter Smart Locks
Google Home’s support for Matter-certified smart locks further strengthens its security offerings. This integration provides users with lock notifications and the ability to manage passcodes directly within the Google Home app. Select smart locks will also gain integrated Google Home features like one-tap entry, automatic locking, and vacation mode, enhancing convenience and security.
Joining the Google Home Public Preview
This expanded functionality is currently available through the Google Home Public Preview program, starting with the Android app (version 3.27+). iOS support is expected to follow later this year.
To participate in the free preview, open the Google Home app on your Android device or visit home.google.com. Navigate to Settings > Public Preview and select Join Public Preview.
A More Connected and Secure Smart Home

These integrations offer users greater control and peace of mind, further solidifying Google Home’s position as a leading smart home platform.
