Google unveiled a new experimental AI feature called “Ask for Me” on Thursday. Available to select users, this AI agent will search for pricing and appointment availability at local businesses and automatically book appointments on the user’s behalf. Currently, the service is limited to nail salons and auto repair shops.

Accessible through Google Search Labs, “Ask for Me” activates when users search for nail salons or auto repair centers using Google Search. For instance, if you need a mechanic, the feature will ask you questions about the required service, your car’s make and model, and your availability. It then uses this information to contact the shop. You’ll need to provide your contact information (phone number and email) so the AI can update you on its progress.
How “Ask for Me” Works
According to Google, “Ask for Me” will call the business, identify itself as an automated Google system acting on your behalf, and then proceed to schedule the appointment. This automated approach might not be universally welcomed by businesses.
Business Opt-Out and Safeguards
Fortunately, businesses can opt out of this feature by indicating their preference when they receive a call from the AI or through their Google Business Page. Google also stated that it will limit the number of calls a business receives through the feature within a specific timeframe. This measure aims to prevent misuse and harassment.
“Ask for Me” Builds on Duplex Technology
“Ask for Me” is built upon the older Duplex system for Pixel phones, initially tested by Google in 2018. Duplex was lauded as “revolutionary” and “the beginning of something big” for its use of AI (and sometimes human operators) to call restaurants and make reservations. A similar Duplex on the Web feature followed in 2019 but was discontinued in 2022. The mobile version is now integrated into Google Assistant and available in 49 US states and 16 countries. However, the appointment booking and wait time updates are currently US-only.
