Microsoft 365 users now have free access to OpenAI’s advanced o1 model within the Microsoft Copilot AI experience. This powerful integration, activated through a new “Think Deeper” toggle in Copilot chat, offers enhanced reasoning and in-depth analysis capabilities. Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman recently announced this new feature, highlighting its potential for advice, planning, and deep dives into complex topics.

Unlike other Copilot features embedded within Microsoft 365 desktop applications, “Think Deeper” is accessible through the Copilot web-based chat at copilot.microsoft.com or via the dedicated Copilot app. A Microsoft account is required to utilize this functionality.

Accessing “Think Deeper” is straightforward. Users simply log into their Microsoft account through the Copilot webpage. Once logged in, the Copilot welcome page appears. Clicking the Copilot icon in the text box’s right corner activates “Think Deeper,” indicated by a highlighted black icon. Users then enter their prompts and let Copilot generate enhanced responses.

OpenAI initially introduced the o1 model in December 2024, showcasing its impressive capabilities. It boasts an 86% accuracy rate on Mathematics Olympiad problems and PhD-level proficiency in STEM fields.

To demonstrate the difference, an SAT-level math problem was inputted into Copilot. Without “Think Deeper,” Copilot provided a detailed but straightforward solution. Activating “Think Deeper” yielded not just the answer, but also a psychological analysis of the problem’s subject, a historical perspective on its details, and related fun facts. The result was significantly more comprehensive.

Previously, access to the o1 model was exclusive to OpenAI’s paid tiers, including ChatGPT Pro ($200/month) and ChatGPT Plus ($20/month with limited access). While “Think Deeper” and the o1 model are now free for Microsoft users, it’s worth noting that recent announcements indicate price increases for personal Microsoft 365 subscriptions. These increases are expected to take effect in the next renewal cycle.

In conclusion, the integration of OpenAI’s o1 model into Microsoft Copilot via the “Think Deeper” feature represents a significant advancement in AI accessibility. This free access provides users with enhanced reasoning and analytical capabilities, offering deeper insights and more comprehensive responses. While this added value is welcomed, users should be aware of potential upcoming price adjustments for Microsoft 365 subscriptions.
