Apple’s Dynamic Island, a defining feature of recent iPhones, might be getting a makeover with the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Leaks suggest a smaller, more refined Dynamic Island is on the horizon, thanks to advancements in Face ID technology.
According to leaker Digital Chat Station, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will likely incorporate a “metalens” for Face ID. This innovative technology combines the transmitter and receiver components into a single unit, potentially reducing the overall size and thickness of the Dynamic Island. The report hints at similar technology being integrated into future iPad Pro models and a rumored foldable iPad. However, it’s worth noting that no current iPad models feature a Dynamic Island, and the leaker doesn’t explicitly confirm its inclusion in future iPads.
This information contradicts a recent report from supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who predicted a standard-sized Dynamic Island for the entire iPhone 17 Pro series. However, previous rumors, including one from technology analyst Jeff Pu, aligned with Digital Chat Station’s claim, suggesting a shrinking Dynamic Island specifically for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, enabled by metalens technology.
Metalenses represent a significant departure from traditional lens technology. Instead of relying on curved surfaces to bend light, metalenses employ nanostructures on their surface to manipulate and focus light. These intricate structures, known as “meta-atoms,” allow for more precise light control and contribute to a thinner lens design.

Beyond the Dynamic Island, significant camera upgrades are anticipated across the entire iPhone 17 lineup. All models are rumored to feature a 24MP/6P front-facing camera, a substantial improvement over the 12MP/5P lens found in the current iPhone 16 models. This upgrade promises enhanced image quality and reduced distortion.
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are also expected to receive upgraded telephoto lenses, moving from 12MP to 48MP. This would mean all three rear cameras on the next-generation Pro models would boast 48MP lenses.
Recent iPhone buzz has centered around the upcoming iPhone SE 4 and iPhone 17 Air. The iPhone SE 4, the first new SE model in three years, is expected to be announced soon. The iPhone 17 Air is anticipated to introduce the first significant iPhone design change in five years.
Apple first introduced the Dynamic Island with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max in 2022. It replaced the traditional notch, housing the front-facing camera and Face ID sensors. The Dynamic Island also offers interactive and adaptive functionalities, displaying information like incoming calls, music controls, and other notifications. It was subsequently adopted across the entire iPhone 15 lineup and remains a feature in the current iPhone 16 series.
The potential reduction in size for the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s Dynamic Island signifies Apple’s continued refinement of its hardware and design. While these rumors remain unconfirmed, they offer a glimpse into the potential future of the iPhone.
