Google announced that its Gemini AI model is no longer accessible through the Google app on iOS. Apple users now need to download the dedicated Gemini app to utilize the AI chatbot. Previously, iOS users could access Gemini through the existing Google App, available on iPhones and iPads since 2008. This changed last November with the release of the standalone Gemini app, and now Google has fully transitioned iOS users to this dedicated platform.
According to Android Central, Google emailed iOS Gemini users stating, “We’re making some changes to create an even better Gemini experience on iOS. Gemini is now available as its own app, and that’s now the best place to use Gemini. To continue using Gemini, download the new Gemini app from the App Store.”
The dedicated Gemini app offers all the functionalities previously available through the Google app, alongside additional features. These include Gemini Live, which allows verbal conversations with the chatbot, similar to OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode. Further enhancements include integration with other Google Workspace apps like Maps, Gmail, and YouTube, and image creation using the Imagen 3 generative AI model.

While the Gemini app is free to download from the Apple App Store, access to premium features like Gemini Live and Workspace app integration requires a Gemini Advanced subscription. This is included in Google’s One AI premium plan, priced at $20 per month.
In summary, accessing Google’s Gemini AI on iOS devices now exclusively requires the dedicated Gemini app. While this change necessitates downloading a new app, it provides access to an expanded feature set including live conversations, Workspace integrations, and image generation, albeit with some features locked behind a paid subscription.
