AMD’s RX 9000 series has quickly become a contender for the best graphics cards, achieving a level of success that seems to have surprised everyone, including AMD. During a recent roundtable discussion in Japan, the company revealed a significant market share jump, reaching an impressive 45% in the Japanese market. While this data is specific to Japan, it suggests AMD is gaining ground on Nvidia globally, though several factors warrant consideration.

AMD representatives Yoshiaki Sato and Saki Suzuki shared key updates at a Team AMD Roundtable event in Japan, later reported by ASCII. Joining them were representatives from AMD’s board partners, including ASRock, Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, PowerColor, and Sapphire. These partners expressed a desire to produce and sell more Radeon graphics cards, citing GPU shortages as a limiting factor. Sato’s candid response, “AMD isn’t used to selling [this many] graphics cards,” elicited laughter from the audience and highlighted the unexpected demand for AMD’s latest GPUs.

While the 45% market share in Japan represents a significant achievement, AMD isn’t complacent. Sato acknowledged this figure as a “peak,” but a board partner countered, aiming for an ambitious 70% share and playfully referring to AMD as the “opposition party.” This exchange underscores the competitive spirit and drive within AMD and its partners.

AMD is keenly aware of its global market share compared to Nvidia, which typically hovers between 10% and 18%. The strong sales of the RX 9070 suggest a potential increase, although supply constraints could hinder further gains.

Despite outperforming Nvidia’s RTX 50-series in terms of availability (the latter often labeled a “paper launch”), AMD’s RX 9000 series GPUs are largely sold out across many U.S. retailers. Restocks may come with higher prices, potentially impacting AMD’s competitive pricing advantage. Hopefully, AMD can collaborate with its partners to increase supply and maintain reasonable pricing, capitalizing on the growing market receptiveness to its products.
