Apple’s dream of a portless iPhone might be closer than we think. Despite the European Union’s mandate for USB-C charging, a recent confirmation suggests that a portless iPhone wouldn’t violate the existing regulations. This opens up exciting possibilities for Apple’s future iPhone designs.
Reports initially indicated that Apple considered making the iPhone 17 Air its first portless model, but shelved the idea due to EU regulations, as reported by Bloomberg. One key regulation was the Common Charger Directive, an environmental law compelling Apple to transition from Lightning to USB-C to minimize electronic waste. However, a statement from European Commission press officer Federica Miccoli, as reported by 9to5Mac, clarifies the situation.
Wireless Charging and the Common Charger Directive
Miccoli explained that since wireless charging devices don’t use wired charging, they aren’t required to adhere to the harmonized (wired) charging solution mandated by the directive. This essentially gives Apple the green light to sell a purely wirelessly charged iPhone, using technologies like MagSafe, in the European market. While the iPhone 17 Air might not be the first portless iPhone, the possibility remains open for future models.
