Just a day after restricting free ChatGPT users’ image generation capabilities, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed the situation, citing strain on server infrastructure and potential GPU overload.
The trend, while “super fun,” according to Altman’s X post, has resulted in significant processing demands, figuratively “melting” GPUs at OpenAI’s data centers. This necessitates temporary rate limits to optimize system efficiency. OpenAI acknowledges potential disruptions to image generation requests and assures users that a fix is underway. Altman expressed hope for a swift resolution, stating the adjustments “hopefully won’t be long!”
While paid users currently have access to image generation with the advanced reasoning model, free users will soon regain limited access, with a daily allowance of three images. A specific timeline for these implementations has yet to be announced.
