Instagram continues to mirror TikTok’s features, now allowing users to play Reels at 2x speed. This highly requested feature allows for quicker consumption of longer videos, catering to users’ busy schedules.
Meta announced this update via email on Thursday, highlighting the ability to accelerate Reels playback speed. This feature directly addresses user feedback and aligns Instagram’s functionality with TikTok’s existing 2x speed option.
To utilize the 2x speed, simply press and hold the left or right edge of the screen while a Reel is playing. This enables fast-forwarding through the video. Releasing your finger returns the video to normal playback speed.

Instagram introduced Reels a few years ago as a direct competitor to the increasingly popular TikTok. Initially limited to 15-second clips, Reels can now be up to three minutes long, with longer videos reverting to standard Instagram posts. The 2x speed feature, however, is exclusive to Reels.
TikTok introduced its 2x speed playback feature in 2023, coinciding with the platform’s expansion to 10-minute videos, and even longer for movie or TV episode uploads. TikTok offers a dedicated 2x playback button within its clear display mode.
The addition of 2x speed to Instagram Reels acknowledges users’ limited time and attention spans. This feature caters to those who prefer to quickly skim through content or jump to specific sections, accommodating busy lifestyles filled with work, school, or family commitments. It enables faster access to desired information within longer videos.
The introduction of 2x speed reflects Instagram’s ongoing efforts to refine its platform and provide users with a more dynamic viewing experience.
