The Apple Watch has seen various iterations, crafted from materials like aluminum, ceramic, stainless steel, and titanium. While glass has played a role in display technology, a fully glass-encased Apple Watch remains unseen. Could this change in the future? While unlikely in the near term, there’s evidence suggesting Apple is at least exploring the possibility.
Recent rumors from Chinese leaker Instant Digital (via MacRumors) hint at a potential all-glass Apple Watch. While concrete details are lacking, Apple’s patent history lends some credence to this speculation.
One such patent outlines designs for various all-glass devices, including an Apple Watch, iPhone, and even a Mac Pro tower. This patent describes a “six-sided glass enclosure defining an interior volume,” offering a glimpse into Apple’s vision.
Another patent application, titled “Wearable Electronic Device with Glass Shell,” filed in May 2020, further explores this concept. It details various chassis options, or “shells,” for the Apple Watch, suggesting potential designs ranging from flat side surfaces to curved, rounded, or other shapes.
While these patents highlight Apple’s interest in all-glass designs for its wearable, it’s crucial to remember that patents don’t always translate into actual products. Many companies file patents for exploratory purposes, and the all-glass Apple Watch seems to be in this conceptual phase rather than a confirmed upcoming release.
Instead of an all-glass model, Apple is expected to launch the Apple Watch Series 11 and Ultra 3 this year. The Series 11 is rumored to receive a chip upgrade, possibly a MicroLED display, and a design similar to the Series 10.
The Apple Watch Ultra 3, the first update since 2023, might be the first Apple Watch to offer satellite connectivity and 5G. A switch to a MediaTek modem, replacing the current Intel 4G modem, could enable these satellite features.
Both the Apple Watch Series 11 and Ultra 3 are expected to be unveiled alongside the iPhone 17 series in September 2025. While an all-glass Apple Watch remains a distant possibility, Apple continues to innovate its wearable lineup, focusing on tangible improvements in performance and connectivity.
