The latest news on the iPhone 17 RAM is a mixed bag. While several models are slated for a significant memory upgrade, not all will benefit, and the full transition might not happen until the iPhone 18. This information comes from renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, though it’s important to remember that these predictions are subject to change until officially confirmed by Apple.

According to Kuo, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, Pro, and Air models are expected to receive a RAM upgrade from 8GB to 12GB. This is a positive development, as previous predictions suggested only the Pro Max would see the increased memory. This boost should enhance performance and multitasking capabilities for users of these higher-end models.

Unfortunately, the base iPhone 17 model will likely remain at 8GB of RAM. Supply constraints are reportedly the reason behind this decision, potentially limiting the 12GB upgrade to the premium models. This could be a strategic move by Apple to incentivize consumers towards the more expensive versions.

However, there’s a silver lining for those interested in the base model. Kuo anticipates that the entire iPhone 18 lineup will feature 12GB of RAM, regardless of the model. This suggests that the current RAM disparity is a temporary measure.

This upgrade comes at a cost for Apple. Kuo estimates that the average selling price (ASP) of 12GB RAM is roughly 50% higher than 8GB RAM. While it’s unclear how this will impact consumer pricing, some speculate that Apple might pass this cost onto buyers, potentially leading to higher prices for the next generation of iPhones. However, it’s too soon to definitively predict the final pricing strategy.
