Flappy Bird, the notoriously addictive mobile game, has returned to Android devices after a decade-long hiatus. This revival, facilitated by Epic Games Store, marks a new chapter for the simple yet challenging game that captivated millions in the early 2010s.

The game, originally removed from app stores by its creator, Dong Nguyen, in 2014, is now available exclusively on Android through Flappy Bird Publishing, partnered with Epic Games. While Nguyen has stated he’s not involved in this resurgence and receives no profit, the relaunch promises new content, including “worlds, characters, and themes” slated for release throughout 2025. Monetization will be through ads and in-game purchases, specifically helmets.

The journey back to mobile hasn’t been smooth. Last year, the Flappy Bird Foundation attempted a relaunch via Telegram, which was subsequently withdrawn. Further complicating matters, cryptocurrency researcher Varun Biniwale reported a web3-infused remake by 1208 Productions (owners of the NFT brand Deez). Nguyen publicly denounced this crypto-tied version on X (formerly Twitter), clarifying he hadn’t sold the game or its trademark, and emphasizing his disapproval of cryptocurrency.

This official relaunch allows players to revisit a mobile gaming classic, experiencing Flappy Bird in a new light. While the core gameplay remains—guiding a bird through pipe-filled obstacle courses with carefully timed taps—the promised updates suggest a fresh take on the familiar formula. The revival offers an intriguing blend of nostalgia and new content for both long-time fans and newcomers.

This comeback also highlights the enduring appeal of simple, addictive mobile games. Flappy Bird’s return, alongside continued popularity of titles like Angry Birds, demonstrates that even in a rapidly evolving mobile landscape, classic gameplay can still find a place. The return of Flappy Bird to the mobile gaming arena could spark renewed interest and competition in the simple, skill-based genre.
