The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has concluded its two-year investigation into potential engine failures in Ford vehicles equipped with EcoBoost engines. The probe, initiated in July 2022 following reports of issues with 2021 Bronco SUVs, encompassed over 411,000 vehicles, including the Ford F-150, Bronco, Edge, Explorer, and Lincoln Aviator and Nautilus.
NHTSA Investigation Findings and Ford’s Response
The investigation pinpointed a faulty intake valve as the source of the problem. These defective valves, manufactured between May and October 2021, were prone to fracturing under high temperatures during normal engine operation, potentially leading to power loss or engine shutdown. NHTSA’s forensic analysis confirmed this defect, and Ford acknowledged the issue. Subsequent changes in the valve manufacturing process have largely addressed the problem in newer engines.
Ford estimates that the majority of engines with faulty valves have already experienced failures, with most occurring before the vehicle reached 5,000 miles, and the remaining primarily before 20,000 miles. As a result, Ford has opted not to replace engines outright. Instead, the company has agreed to offer an extended powertrain warranty covering affected vehicles for up to 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. This warranty provides owners with added peace of mind regarding potential future engine issues related to the faulty valves.
Ford’s August Recall and Ongoing Efforts
Prior to the conclusion of the NHTSA investigation, Ford initiated a recall in August affecting approximately 90,000 vehicles, including Bronco, Explorer, Edge, F-150, Aviator, and Nautilus models. The recall primarily targeted the F-150, with nearly 48,000 units potentially affected. This recall offered dealer inspections and tests to identify vehicles containing the defective valves.
