The Rivian R1T has emerged as a significant challenger in the American pickup truck market, aiming to disrupt Ford’s long-standing dominance. While not yet a household name, Rivian made history by launching the first mass-produced electric pickup in the US, marking a pivotal moment in the automotive industry. This isn’t just an experiment; Rivian is targeting volume production and a substantial market share. The R1T, a four-door, five-seater pickup, is designed for adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts. It’s more akin to a Jeep Gladiator tackling Moab trails than a Ford F-350 utility truck. With its innovative design and impressive capabilities, the R1T has garnered significant attention. Let’s delve into what makes this electric pickup so compelling, from its features and performance to its price and availability.

Unveiling the Rivian R1T
Debuting at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, the R1T quickly became the archetype for a new breed of pickup, blending ruggedness, utility, comfort, and eco-consciousness. Its dimensions (217 inches long, 79.3 inches wide, and 71.5 inches tall) are comparable to the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado, but its weight (5,886 pounds) is considerably higher due to the battery pack. Founded in 2009, Rivian had the advantage of designing the R1T from the ground up, unburdened by legacy constraints. The R1T’s futuristic design features a distinctive horizontal light bar, a grille-less front fascia, and sculpted sides. Plastic trim on the rocker panels and wheel arches adds a rugged aesthetic. Impressively, the production model, manufactured in Normal, Illinois, closely resembles the 2018 concept.

The R1T’s interior is technologically advanced yet user-friendly. A three-spoke multi-function steering wheel and a 16-inch touchscreen provide the driver with essential information. A large center armrest conceals a spacious storage compartment, and a horizontal touchscreen displays the infotainment system. Amazon Alexa integration is standard, reflecting Amazon’s significant investment in Rivian. Notably, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are currently unavailable, as is SiriusXM satellite radio. Rivian suggests these features could be added later via software updates if demand warrants. The R1T offers seating for five, with two seats in the front and three in the back. Currently, there are no plans for a smaller, two-door version.
Under the Hood: Rivian’s Skateboard Platform

The R1T utilizes Rivian’s innovative “skateboard” platform, housing the battery pack, electric motors, suspension, brakes, and electronic components. The body sits directly atop this platform. Two battery options are available: the standard Large pack offering a 314-mile range, and the Max pack, a $10,000 upgrade, boosting the range to 400 miles. These are preliminary estimates; official EPA figures are pending. Four independent electric motors, one for each wheel, power the R1T. This configuration allows for precise torque distribution, enhancing off-road capability. The adjustable suspension provides nearly 15 inches of ground clearance and the ability to ford almost three feet of water.
The Tank Turn Feature
The R1T’s unique motor layout enables a “Tank Turn” maneuver, allowing it to rotate 180 degrees on its axis by spinning the left and right wheels in opposite directions. While rarely needed in everyday driving, this feature can be invaluable in off-road situations. This is similar to GMC’s Hurricane Turn, but with electric power instead of a V8 engine.
Accessories and Customization

Beyond the Tank Turn, Rivian offers a range of accessories, including a slide-out camp kitchen with drawers, a countertop, and an electric stove. Other options include a three-person tent and various off-road upgrades.

With the Launch Edition sold out, the R1T is available in two trims: Explore and Adventure. The Explore package starts at $67,500, while the Adventure package begins at $73,000 (before destination charges and incentives). Both trims are well-equipped. The Explore includes the Large battery pack, a manual tonneau cover, and heated seats. The Adventure adds a power tonneau cover, a premium sound system, and ventilated seats. Numerous options are available, including unique paint colors, wheel designs, a spare tire, and an off-road upgrade package.

Deliveries of the Launch Edition began in fall 2021, with other trims reaching customers in early 2022. Rivian sells directly to consumers, bypassing traditional dealerships, but plans to host events for test drives.
Competition and the F-150 Lightning
While the R1T technically competes with the entire pickup truck segment, its primary rival is the Ford F-150 Lightning. The F-150 Lightning offers a similar range, starts at a lower price point, and leverages the established F-150 brand.

Rivian is open to licensing its skateboard platform to other automakers. While Lincoln abandoned plans for an SUV based on the platform, Rivian is fulfilling a contract to produce 100,000 electric delivery vans for Amazon.

Rivian also offers the R1S, a seven-seater SUV built on the same platform as the R1T, sharing its powertrain and technology. The R1S is available in the same Explore and Adventure trims, starting at $70,000 and $75,500, respectively. Deliveries of the Launch Edition are expected to commence by the end of 2021.
