Lexus, Toyota’s luxury division, has long been a hybrid pioneer, introducing the RX 400h in 2005. However, in today’s automotive landscape, a hybrid-heavy lineup isn’t enough. Facing stricter emissions standards and the rising popularity of electric vehicles, Lexus has finally launched its first all-electric model for North America: the 2023 Lexus RZ 450e. Based on the Toyota bZ4X, the RZ boasts unique styling, a luxurious interior, and a premium price tag, starting at $59,650. Our review explores the RZ 450e Luxury trim, priced at $67,245 with options.
Design and Luxury Refinements

While sharing the e-TNGA platform with the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, the RZ exhibits distinct Lexus design language. Instead of a traditional grille, the RZ features a stylized spindle grille outline created by the headlights and surrounding trim. Flared front fenders and a sharp character line below the windows contribute to a sportier aesthetic. Inside, the RZ offers a refined cabin experience. A conventional dashboard layout integrates the touchscreen and digital instrument cluster seamlessly. Thoughtful storage solutions, upscale materials like blue suede and white leatherette, illuminated door panel accents, and a switchable panoramic glass roof create a luxurious ambiance. While similar in size to the Lexus NX and Tesla Model Y, the RZ offers slightly less cargo space and lacks a front trunk (frunk).
Advanced Tech and Intuitive Infotainment

Lexus has significantly improved its infotainment system with the Lexus Interface. The RZ features a 14.0-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, and an optional 10.0-inch head-up display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Wi-Fi, wireless device charging, and a cloud-based navigation system with Google points of interest are standard. The system’s natural language voice recognition allows for hands-free control of various functions. Physical controls for essential features like audio volume and temperature are retained. Steering wheel controls interact with the head-up display, minimizing distractions. Standard driver-assist features include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and automatic emergency braking. Optional features include front cross-traffic alert, park assist, and subscription-based Traffic Jam Assist.
Performance and Driving Dynamics

The RZ 450e utilizes a dual-motor all-wheel drive system (Direct4) and a 71.4-kilowatt-hour battery pack. With 308 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque, the RZ achieves a Lexus-estimated zero-to-60 mph time of 5.0 seconds. The Direct4 system optimizes power distribution for both traction and ride comfort. While the RZ provides smooth acceleration and a comfortable ride, it doesn’t offer one-pedal driving. A regeneration boost paddle increases deceleration for a more engaging driving experience.
Range, Charging, and Warranty

The RZ’s range is a significant drawback. Models with 18-inch wheels offer an EPA-estimated range of 220 miles, while 20-inch wheels reduce it to 196 miles. This falls short of competitors like the Tesla Model Y, Audi Q4 e-tron, and Genesis GV60. DC fast charging at 150 kilowatts allows for an 80% charge in approximately 30 minutes. A full charge using a Level 2 AC charger takes nine hours. The RZ carries a four-year, 50,000-mile basic warranty; a six-year, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty; and an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty for the battery pack.
Configuration and Final Thoughts

For the best tech features, the Luxury trim is recommended. While the RZ excels in luxury, comfort, and driving dynamics, its limited range and charging performance are significant disadvantages compared to competitors. The RZ is a compelling option for shorter commutes and around-town driving, but its range limitations make it less suitable for long journeys.
