The year 2024 saw a plethora of impressive smartphone releases, but the Google Pixel 9 Pro continues to hold a special place. While my daily driver remains the iPhone 16 Pro, revisiting the Pixel 9 Pro evokes the same delight I experienced upon its initial release. Google’s Pixel line has consistently impressed me with its clean Android interface, a hallmark maintained over several iterations. However, the Pixel 9 series introduced significant changes, breathing a fresh, modern feel into the Pixel experience. Although I briefly used the Pixel 9 Pro in October for a camera comparison against my iPhone 16 Pro, returning to it for an extended period has reaffirmed my appreciation.
Elevated Hardware: A Design Evolution

From the Pixel 6 through the Pixel 8, Google largely maintained a consistent design language. While distinctive, this aesthetic, much like the iPhone Pro models, began to feel somewhat stagnant. The Pixel 9’s redesign is a welcome change. The revamped camera bar is significantly sleeker than its predecessor, seamlessly integrating into the metal frame for an elegant touch. This design maintains the Pixel’s unique identity while achieving a higher level of refinement. The shift to flat edges, a trend sweeping the smartphone industry, enhances comfort and facilitates screen gestures. The matte back glass adds a premium tactile experience, minimizing slippage. Initially drawn to the Peony color of the standard Pixel 9, I ultimately opted for the Rose Quartz Pixel 9 Pro. While initially less vibrant than Peony, Rose Quartz has grown on me. This subtler pink exudes a sophisticated femininity. While Peony remains a striking option, Rose Quartz offers a refined alternative for pink enthusiasts. The Pixel 9 Pro’s hardware continues to justify its reputation as the “iPhone of Android.”
Circle to Search: Enhanced Functionality

While the pervasiveness of AI can be overwhelming, its utility in mobile features like Circle to Search is undeniable. Google’s continuous improvement of this feature on Pixel devices is commendable. The integration of the Pixel Screenshots app with Circle to Search, introduced in the December Feature Drop, adds practical value. Saving searches directly to Screenshots simplifies remembering potential purchases or gift ideas. This synergy of features greatly enhances organization. Furthermore, the latest update addresses previous limitations of the Screenshots app by automatically categorizing screenshots and suggesting actions. While not flawless, this represents significant progress.
Pixel 9 Pro: A Compelling Package

Extended use of the Pixel 9 Pro has not only reaffirmed its strengths but also revealed previously unnoticed features. Pairing it with the Pixel Watch 3 has been a surprisingly positive experience, surpassing the Apple Watch Ultra in aesthetics and interface. While this necessitates using the Fitbit app, it provides valuable health insights. Although the Tensor G4 may not outperform the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or Apple’s A18 Pro, the Pixel 9 Pro’s performance remains consistently fast, responsive, and reliable. The display is exceptional, boasting higher resolution and peak brightness than the iPhone 16 Pro, significantly improving outdoor visibility. While my previous camera comparison favored the iPhone 16 Pro, the Pixel 9 Pro’s camera capabilities are still impressive, especially its superior selfie camera. Amidst the numerous 2024 smartphone releases, the Pixel 9 Pro remains a compelling choice, consistently exceeding expectations.
