The rollout of Windows 11’s 24H2 update has been temporarily paused by Microsoft for systems running specific Ubisoft games. Widespread reports of crashes and performance problems, impacting titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Origins, Odyssey, Star Wars Outlaws, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, prompted the action.
Users have encountered various issues, including black screens, freezing, and unresponsiveness while playing or loading the affected games. One Reddit user, who recently purchased a high-spec gaming laptop, described being unable to play Assassin’s Creed Origins for more than a few minutes due to crashes resulting in a black screen with audio, requiring a forced quit through Task Manager. Similar complaints, mentioning the “NTDLL.dll” error, have surfaced across online forums.
While Ubisoft has implemented a temporary fix for Star Wars Outlaws, Microsoft acknowledges that performance issues may persist. The company recommends against manually installing the 24H2 update and advises using Task Manager to force-quit any unresponsive games until a permanent solution is released.
This isn’t the first compatibility hurdle for the 24H2 update. Last month, issues emerged with competitive multiplayer games utilizing Epic’s Easy Anti-Cheat software, affecting titles like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Rocket League. Incompatibilities with certain Western Digital SSDs were also reported.
Microsoft has confirmed ongoing collaboration with Ubisoft and other developers to rectify these glitches. Although a specific timeline for the resolution remains unavailable, the company has pledged to reinstate the update for impacted systems once the fixes are implemented.
This situation underscores the difficulties of balancing large-scale OS updates with the diverse software and hardware ecosystem. As Microsoft diligently works to resolve these problems, users are encouraged to stay updated through official support channels and install the 24H2 update only when stability is assured.
