Fidough’s Debut in Pokémon GO Hinges on Global Challenge Success

Pokémon GO has traditionally released entire generations of Pokémon at once. However, as the game’s Pokédex nears completion, the introduction of new Pokémon has slowed significantly. 2024 saw many new Pokémon locked behind Raids or Eggs, making them less accessible. Now, the announcement of Fidough’s debut has players wondering what 2025 holds for Pokémon acquisition.

Fans of baking and dogs will be thrilled to hear that Fidough, the Puppy Pokémon, is coming to Pokémon GO. Well, probably. For the first time, a Pokémon’s debut hinges on a Global Challenge. This January, players will need to work together to unlock Fidough, rather than simply encountering it in the wild, Raids, or Eggs.

The Fidough Fetch event, running from January 3rd to 7th, 2025, marks an unusual start to the year. Players must complete a Global Challenge before Fidough and its evolution, Dachsbun, become available.

While Global Challenges aren’t new, this application is. Previously, challenges unlocked rewards or bonuses during events. The Fidough Fetch event, however, requires players to collectively achieve specific Nice Curveball Throw targets before Fidough even appears.

Six reward tiers exist, each tied to a specific number of Nice Curveball Throws. Niantic hasn’t revealed the exact numbers, potentially allowing adjustments based on community progress. The tiers are:

  • Level 1: Double XP for catching Pokémon
  • Level 2: Double Stardust for catching Pokémon, new event-themed Field Research, and Fidough/Dachsbun debut
  • Level 3: 2.5x XP for catching Pokémon, more event-themed Field Research, and Hisuian Growlithe and Greavard added to Wild Spawns
  • Level 4: 2.5x Stardust for catching Pokémon
  • Level 5: Triple XP and triple Stardust for catching Pokémon
  • Level 6: Quadruple XP and quadruple Stardust for catching Pokémon

Successfully hitting these targets promises substantial Stardust and XP gains.

How to Catch Fidough: A Mystery

Unlocking Fidough is an early reward, suggesting the Global Challenge shouldn’t be too difficult. However, Niantic’s official announcement omits a crucial detail: how players will encounter Fidough after the challenge.

Previously, new Pokémon debuts meant spotting new silhouettes on the Nearby Radar. Recent additions like Sinistea (Raid exclusive) and Toxel (10km Eggs) challenge this assumption. This has players scrutinizing the Fidough Fetch event details, wondering if obtaining Fidough will involve further complexities.

Niantic specifically mentions Hisuian Growlithe as a Wild Spawn addition. Fidough, however, is only described as “making its debut.” This omission doesn’t confirm Fidough’s appearance in Eggs or Raids, but it doesn’t rule it out either. It seems players must first meet the Nice Curveball Throw goal before discovering how to “fetch” Fidough.
