The British boutique automaker, Ariel, renowned for its unconventional sports cars, has unveiled an electric concept version of its Nomad 2 off-roader: the E-Nomad. This innovative vehicle, if it makes it to production, promises to carve a unique niche in the burgeoning EV market.
The E-Nomad maintains the distinctive, rugged aesthetic of the gas-powered Nomad 2. Its high ground clearance, quad headlights resembling insect eyes, protruding wheels, and functional interior set it apart. This electric off-roader sits at the crossroads of sports car agility, SUV versatility, and dune buggy ruggedness, offering a driving experience unlike any other.
Powering the E-Nomad is a rear-mounted electric motor generating 281 horsepower and 361 pound-feet of torque. Coupled with a 41-kilowatt-hour battery pack, this setup propels the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in a brisk 3.4 seconds, matching the acceleration of the base Nomad 2 equipped with a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
The E-Nomad’s relatively small battery pack offers a significant advantage in charging times. Ariel claims a fast charge from 20% to 80% capacity takes less than 25 minutes. Standard household outlet charging is also possible.
To maximize range, Ariel incorporated body panels designed to minimize drag, a crucial factor for electric vehicle efficiency. These panels are crafted from a sustainable flax fiber material, which is not only eco-friendly but also about 9% lighter than carbon fiber. The E-Nomad concept weighs approximately 1,975 pounds, roughly 400 pounds heavier than its gasoline counterpart, and boasts a range of up to 150 miles. While not a long-range vehicle, the E-Nomad is intended for exhilarating short trips, not long-distance cruising.
The future of the E-Nomad remains uncertain, but Ariel hints at the possibility of production. Simon Saunders, Ariel’s director, stated, “While the E-Nomad is a concept, it does show production intent for the vehicle and hints at just a small part of Ariel’s future.” He added, “Once it has been through our usual, grueling testing regime, we could opt to add E-Nomad alongside its ICE-powered Nomad 2 sibling, so we’ll take great interest in customer feedback on the concept car.”
The E-Nomad represents Ariel’s foray into the electric vehicle landscape, showcasing the potential for electric power in a unique and exciting off-road package. While still a concept, the E-Nomad suggests a promising future for electric adventure.
