The dedicated Copilot key, a prominent feature on Microsoft’s AI PCs, initially faced criticism. However, Microsoft is now empowering users to configure this key to launch applications beyond the Copilot AI assistant. This enhanced functionality will be available first to Windows Insiders in the Release Preview on Windows 11, version 23H2.
Expanded Copilot Key Functionality
While initially tied solely to the AI assistant, the Copilot key is gaining versatility. This update addresses user feedback, providing greater control over this dedicated hardware key present on an increasing number of premium laptops.
Release and Availability
Although announced in a recent Windows Insider blog post, the feature rollout isn’t immediate. Microsoft confirms it will reach Release Preview Insiders on Windows 11, version 23H2 at a later, unspecified date. It’s not included in the Windows 11 Preview Build 22631.4387, contrary to earlier speculation.
MSIX Package Requirement (Removed)
Initially, configuring the Copilot key for other apps was linked to using MSIX-packaged applications. This requirement, intended to ensure app security and privacy, has since been removed.
Customization and Compatible Apps
When available, customizing the Copilot key will be straightforward. Navigate to Settings > Personalization > Text input to select the desired application. Microsoft hasn’t yet released a list of compatible apps, but more information is expected soon.
A New Era for Keyboard Keys
The introduction of the Copilot key marked the first new dedicated key in nearly three decades. While initially perceived as merely a shortcut, its continued presence on new AI PCs, powered by NPUs, signifies its growing importance.
The Future of the Copilot Key
This update transforms the Copilot key from a single-purpose shortcut into a more versatile tool. It offers greater user control and customization, enhancing the overall experience on Windows 11 AI PCs. As more compatible apps become available, the Copilot key’s utility will undoubtedly expand further.
