The Game Awards 2024 showcased a new trailer for Den of Wolves, the upcoming cyberpunk heist game from 10 Chambers, the developers of GTFO. The trailer reveals a timely and provocative premise: players assassinate corporate executives in a dystopian future. MaagX attended a press briefing prior to the reveal, gaining insights into the game’s story, heist mechanics, and overall structure.

The trailer offers glimpses of intense first-person shooting but keeps gameplay details close to its chest. Den of Wolves is a four-player cooperative heist experience, reminiscent of Payday (which 10 Chambers CEO Ulf Andersson worked on), set in a bleak future. The world has been destabilized by AI-powered hackers, leading to government collapse, economic ruin, and widespread identity theft. Corporations seize the opportunity, offering to restore order in exchange for unchecked power.

This sets the stage for Midway City, a corporate-controlled trade hub where unchecked power breeds dystopia. In 2097, desperate mercenaries are hired to carry out corporate dirty work, ranging from prototype theft to executive assassinations. This premise takes on a particularly sharp edge given the recent real-world assassination of United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson. Andersson frames Den of Wolves as a game about surviving late-stage capitalism by any means necessary, seemingly inviting discussion about the ethics of political violence in such a world.
