Musk’s tweet hinted at a future where Optimus could become a personal robotic companion, akin to C-3PO and R2-D2 from Star Wars.

Catching a ball, a seemingly simple task for humans, requires complex computations for a robot, including rapid object detection, trajectory prediction, and precise hand-eye coordination. Optimus’s successful demonstration of this skill is a testament to advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence.

While many lauded the robot’s capabilities, some questioned whether the demonstration was truly autonomous or remotely controlled. Skepticism arose due to the robot’s seemingly human-like movements, reminiscent of Optimus’s initial unveiling in 2021, which featured a person in a robot suit.

Beyond industrial uses, Musk imagines Optimus as a versatile household robot capable of performing various chores, from babysitting and dog-walking to grocery shopping. He even suggests Optimus could become a companion and friend.

However, owning a personal Optimus robot won’t be cheap. Musk estimates a cost of around $25,000 once production scales up.

The ability to catch a tennis ball, while seemingly trivial, represents significant progress in robotics, hinting at a future where humanoid robots could play a more substantial role in both industrial and domestic settings.
