Find Nearby addresses this limitation by providing a visual map guiding users toward the tracker’s location. As the user approaches the tracker, the map’s indicator grows, visually representing proximity. Once near the indicated location, users can then utilize the “Play Sound” feature for precise location.

Furthermore, Google has implemented a privacy-focused feature allowing users to temporarily disable their device’s location sharing within the Find My Device network. This 24-hour pause prevents detected unknown tags from accessing the user’s location, offering an additional layer of security. This option is accessible through the alert interface by selecting “I can’t find the tracker > Temporarily pause.” This pause ensures user privacy while addressing potential tracking concerns.
Beyond location tracking, Android’s enhanced system provides crucial information about the unknown tracker, including the device identifier, the owner’s concealed email address, and, in certain cases, the last four digits of their phone number. This data can be invaluable in identifying the source of the tracking device and taking appropriate action.

Upon discovering an unknown tracking device, individuals are advised to move to a safe public area and contact law enforcement immediately. Documenting the tracker’s details and taking screenshots of the alert information is also recommended.
While the unknown tracker alert system operates automatically, users can initiate a manual scan through the Settings app by navigating to Safety & Emergency > Unknown tracker alerts > Scan now. This feature empowers users to proactively address potential tracking concerns.
The development of this system followed Apple’s release of the Tracker Detect app in 2021, designed to help Android users detect hidden AirTags. Google responded by developing its own integrated, automatic tracker detection system, significantly enhancing Android’s security features.
