The PlayStation 2, despite its discontinuation in 2013, continues to hold the title of the best-selling video game console in history, with a staggering 160 million units sold. This impressive figure was recently confirmed by Sony on their official PlayStation website, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation brand.
While modern consoles like the Nintendo Switch continue to perform exceptionally well, with approximately 146 million units sold according to Nintendo, they still haven’t reached the monumental sales figures of the PS2. Even the Nintendo DS, the second best-selling console of all time, sits at around 154 million, still trailing behind the legendary PS2.
This updated sales number for the PS2 marks a significant milestone, as Sony ceased reporting console sales figures in their financial reports back in 2013. Earlier this year, former CEO Jim Ryan hinted at the 160 million figure in an interview with the Official PlayStation Podcast, though the number remained unconfirmed until now.
Sony’s official timeline also sheds light on the sales figures of other PlayStation consoles. The PS4 sits comfortably in second place with 117 million units sold, followed by the original PlayStation (PS1) at 102 million. The PS3, despite its initial challenges, reached 87 million units sold.
The timeline notably omits sales data for handheld consoles like the PSP and PS Vita, as well as the PS VR devices. While estimates place the PSP around 80 million units, the PS Vita struggled to gain traction, selling between 10 and 15 million units. Sony’s venture into virtual reality with PSVR has remained a niche market, and the future investment in PSVR 2 remains to be seen.
The PS2’s enduring success can be attributed to several factors, building upon the foundation laid by the PS1. Backward compatibility, a built-in DVD player, and an incredibly diverse and iconic game library all contributed to its widespread appeal. From classics like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater to innovative titles like Shadow of the Colossus, the PS2 offered something for everyone.
The PS2’s impressive sales record serves as a testament to its lasting impact on the gaming industry and its place as a true icon in console history. While the gaming landscape continues to evolve, the PlayStation 2’s legacy as the best-selling console of all time remains firmly secured.
