Microsoft has announced Windows 11 support for the Meta Quest 3 and Quest Pro VR headsets at Microsoft Ignite 2024. This update, focused on productivity rather than gaming, allows users to access the full functionality of Windows 11 in mixed reality through a local Windows PC or a Windows 365 Cloud PC. The integration enables users to create multiple virtual monitors within their VR environment, regardless of their physical workspace.

This move places Microsoft in a better position to compete with Apple, which has been promoting MacBook integration with its Vision Pro headset. Leveraging the advanced hardware of the Quest 3 and Pro, Microsoft aims to provide a robust mixed reality workspace solution.
A Long-Awaited Integration
This Windows 11 integration was initially hinted at in 2022 alongside the launch of the Meta Quest Pro. A blog post from that time mentioned the future availability of Windows 365 on Meta Quest devices, enabling users to stream a Windows Cloud PC with personalized apps, content, and settings.

However, progress has been slow, with Windows Mixed Reality headsets being deprecated in December 2023 and the Quest Pro discontinued. This new announcement signals a renewed commitment from Microsoft to the mixed reality space.
Seamless Setup and Enhanced Functionality
Microsoft promises a seamless setup process, claiming it takes mere seconds to connect to a private, high-quality, multi-monitor virtual workstation. While existing methods, like remote desktop apps, allow Windows 11 on Quest headsets, Microsoft’s solution is expected to be more comprehensive.
Keeping Pace with the Competition
With the expansion of the Horizon OS family and the growing competition from Apple, Microsoft’s renewed focus on mixed reality support for the Quest platform is timely. This strategic move allows them to remain competitive in the evolving VR/AR landscape.
The public preview of this Windows 11 integration is scheduled for December.
