The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, a German icon synonymous with luxury and off-road prowess, is entering the electric age. Known for its rugged capabilities and high-end appointments, the Geländewagen is now available as the G580 with EQ Technology, bridging the gap between traditional luxury and sustainable motoring. Expected to debut as a 2025 model alongside updated gasoline variants, the G580 leverages electric powertrain technology to enhance its off-road performance and update a timeless design.

Retaining the Classic G-Wagon Look
Unlike Mercedes’ dedicated EQ EV lineup, the G580 maintains the classic G-Class aesthetic. Subtle exterior modifications, including a raised hood, flared wheel arches with integrated air curtains, and a discreetly placed charge port, differentiate the electric variant. These subtle changes are possible because the G580 utilizes a modified ladder frame from existing G-Class models, adapted to accommodate the battery pack and electric motors.

Quad-Motor Powertrain and Performance
The G580 boasts a quad-motor powertrain, delivering an impressive 579 horsepower and 859 pound-feet of torque. This translates to an estimated 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 112 mph. The individual motors eliminate the need for traditional mechanical locking differentials, simulating their function through precise torque vectoring to each wheel. Each motor also incorporates its own transmission with a low-range reduction gear, mirroring the functionality of transfer cases found in conventional off-road vehicles.

Off-Road Capability Enhanced
Despite housing a substantial 116-kilowatt-hour battery pack beneath the floor, protected by a lightweight mixed-material skid plate, the electric G-Class maintains an impressive 9.8 inches of ground clearance. It can also ford up to 33.5 inches of water, exceeding the capability of its gasoline counterparts. Key off-road metrics include a 32.0-degree approach angle, a 30.7-degree departure angle, and a 20.3-degree breakover angle.

Innovative Off-Road Features
The quad-motor system enables innovative features such as G-Turn, allowing the G-Class to rotate in place like a tank (limited to two rotations), G-Steering, which applies torque to individual wheels for tighter off-road turning, and an intelligent crawl function that maintains a preset speed over challenging terrain. To compensate for the lack of engine noise, Mercedes has implemented an artificial soundtrack called G-Roar.
Charging and Range
While official range figures haven’t been released, the G580 supports 200-kilowatt DC fast charging, enabling a 10% to 80% charge in a claimed 32 minutes. An 11-kW AC onboard charger provides a full recharge in 13.5 hours. The G580 also features the same variable regenerative braking system found in other Mercedes EVs and plug-in hybrids, allowing the driver to adjust regeneration levels using steering wheel paddles.

Luxurious Interior and Technology
Inside, the G580 offers the same level of luxury as other G-Class models, featuring premium materials like Nappa leather upholstery. The Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, is displayed on a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen. A 360-degree camera system includes a “transparent hood” function, providing a virtual view of the terrain directly beneath the front of the vehicle.

Edition One Launch and Competition
The G580 with EQ Technology will launch in the U.S. as an Edition One model, featuring exclusive paint options and interior/exterior trim details. Pricing is yet to be announced, but given the G-Class’s premium positioning, it’s expected to be competitive with rivals like the GMC Hummer EV SUV and Rivian R1S. With electric Jeep and Land Rover models on the horizon, the electric off-road segment is poised for significant growth.
