Jeep is accelerating its electrification strategy with the all-new 2024 Wagoneer S, the brand’s first all-electric SUV for the North American market, slated to arrive at dealerships this fall. While bearing the iconic Wagoneer name, synonymous with the brand’s legacy of rugged SUVs, the Wagoneer S charts a new course with its all-electric powertrain and modern design.
A New Chapter for Wagoneer
The Wagoneer name holds a significant place in Jeep’s history, alongside Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. The original Wagoneer was a pioneer in the SUV segment, paving the way for the modern Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models. However, the Wagoneer S distinguishes itself from its gasoline-powered siblings, showcasing a departure from the traditional design language. Jeep initially announced the Wagoneer S alongside the more conventionally styled Recon, but prioritized the Wagoneer S launch due to its broader market appeal, particularly outside the U.S., according to Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa in a statement to MaagX. This strategic decision underscores the Wagoneer S’s significance as the first Wagoneer model to be sold globally.
Sleek Design and Aerodynamic Focus
Unlike the boxy design of its gasoline counterparts, the Wagoneer S embraces a streamlined aesthetic, reminiscent of the recently discontinued Jeep Cherokee. This design choice prioritizes aerodynamics to optimize range, according to Ralph Gilles, Stellantis design chief. A prominent rear wing further enhances aerodynamic performance. Despite the modern styling, the signature illuminated seven-slot grille affirms the vehicle’s Jeep identity. Built on the STLA Large platform, shared with the Dodge Charger Daytona, the Wagoneer S boasts dimensions comparable to the Tesla Model Y, though it’s considerably longer. However, this doesn’t translate to a significant advantage in interior space or cargo capacity.
Performance and Range
The initial Wagoneer S Launch Edition models will feature a dual-motor powertrain generating 600 horsepower and 617 pound-feet of torque. Jeep claims a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds, surpassing even the Model Y Performance. However, with a starting price of $71,995, the Wagoneer S Launch Edition commands a premium.
Off-Road Capabilities and Charging
While embracing electric power, the Wagoneer S retains some off-road prowess, featuring a version of Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system with Auto, Sport, Eco, Snow, and Sand modes. However, its 6.4 inches of ground clearance is less than that of a Subaru Crosstrek. A 100.5-kWh battery pack provides an estimated range of over 300 miles. While utilizing a 400-volt architecture, Jeep projects a 20% to 80% DC fast charge in just 23 minutes. The Launch Edition includes a 48-amp Level 2 AC home charger, capable of charging from 5% to 80% in an estimated 6.8 hours.
Luxurious Interior and Technology
The Wagoneer S offers a premium interior with high-quality materials, including ceramic-coated aluminum trim. Sustainable materials like synthetic leather upholstery and recycled materials for the headliner and carpets further enhance the cabin. The absence of wood trim contributes to a more contemporary aesthetic. A comprehensive infotainment system featuring a 12.3-inch central touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 10.25-inch front passenger touchscreen, and a 10-inch head-up display comes standard. The system runs Stellantis’ Uconnect 5 software, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and over-the-air updates. A 19-speaker McIntosh audio system is also standard on Launch Edition models.
Market Positioning and Conclusion
The Wagoneer S signifies Jeep’s foray into the luxury electric SUV segment. However, its initial price point may pose a challenge against competitors like the Tesla Model Y. While the Wagoneer S represents a significant step in Jeep’s electrification journey, the upcoming Recon, inspired by the iconic Wrangler, could arguably be a more compelling flagship for the brand’s EV ambitions.
