While the Galaxy S25 launch is highly anticipated, Samsung may have an even bigger surprise in store. According to Korean news outlet Yonhap News, the company is expected to reveal plans for a new pair of smart glasses at the Galaxy S25 Unpacked event in early 2025. These augmented reality (AR) glasses are rumored to resemble traditional eyeglasses and weigh a mere 50 grams, only slightly heavier than the average pair of glasses (20-40 grams).

Samsung’s Smart Glasses: A 2025 Launch?

While the unveiling is slated for January, the public launch isn’t expected until Q3 2025. Samsung is actively recruiting and reinforcing relevant departments to ensure smooth development. This marks Samsung’s second foray into the wearables market recently, following the July 2024 release of the Galaxy Ring alongside the Galaxy Watch Ultra and Galaxy Watch 7.

A Second Chance at Smart Eyewear

This isn’t Samsung’s first attempt at head-mounted tech. During the mobile VR boom, they partnered with Oculus to create the Gear VR headset. Though innovative, its reliance on Galaxy smartphones as a screen limited its compatibility and ultimately led to its discontinuation.

Learning from Past Partnerships

Samsung’s prior collaboration with Oculus provided valuable experience. For these new smart glasses, they could draw inspiration from Meta’s successful partnership with Ray-Ban. The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses exemplify the power of comfortable design, stylish aesthetics, and wide retail availability.

Integrating Galaxy AI: The Next Step?

Following the trend set by Meta and Solos (with ChatGPT integration in the AirGo 3), Samsung may integrate its Galaxy AI technology into these new smart glasses. This could provide a unique and competitive edge in the burgeoning AR market.
