The latest installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, has finally arrived. However, it wasn’t the first entry in Paramount’s Sonic Cinematic Universe this year. That distinction belongs to the Knuckles series, which premiered earlier in April. If you missed the series, you might be wondering about its connection to the new movie and whether it’s essential viewing. While Sonic 3 does acknowledge the show, it does so subtly, ensuring that those who haven’t seen the series won’t be confused.
The link to the Knuckles series lies with the character Wade Whipple, played by Adam Pally. First introduced as the somewhat inept deputy of Green Hills in the original Sonic movie, Wade reprised his role in the sequel. Initially a minor character, Wade’s importance grew significantly in the Knuckles series. The show focuses on Knuckles taking Wade under his wing, attempting to mold him into a capable warrior. Over six episodes, their bond strengthens as Wade learns valuable lessons from the red echidna, forging a genuine friendship. WARNING: SPOILERS FOR SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 BELOW.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic and his allies struggle against the formidable Shadow. As the situation becomes dire, Sonic realizes the Master Emerald is their only hope. Following the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Knuckles has been safeguarding the Master Emerald, keeping it from those who might misuse its immense power. While Knuckles initially resists Sonic’s plan to utilize the Emerald, he eventually reveals its location, cautioning Sonic about the challenges ahead. After emphasizing the difficulty of the task, Sonic discovers the Master Emerald is in the possession of none other than Wade Whipple, who is casually using it as a hockey puck!
This is a relatively minor reference to the Knuckles show, yet it provides a rewarding moment for viewers familiar with the characters’ burgeoning friendship in the Paramount+ series. Following their shared adventures, it’s evident Knuckles holds Wade in high regard. Protecting the Master Emerald is a serious responsibility for Knuckles, one he would only entrust to someone he implicitly trusts. Unfortunately, we don’t see Knuckles’ reaction to Wade’s casual handling of the Emerald, leaving us to wonder how this might impact their relationship in the future. While rumors of a second season of Knuckles circulate, Paramount has yet to make an official announcement.
